The start, and it’s a good start It was a risk to do a prequel but this yarn holds up to the Clancy legacy with great background detailsA Different Tom Clancy If you are looking for a Jack Ryan action thriller, this isn't it. However, it is very entertaining and you don't want to put it down. It is somewhat disjointed until all the characters are introduced and developed. It was a good thriller especially when the action centered on the Mexican drug cartels. Seeing how the different government agencies could work together to bring down the cartels if they put their egos aside, and regular people acting like Americans for a change, made the ending exciting and fun to read. I read it twice and was able to put all the characters in perspective. So much activity and so many characters so the second reading made in that much more enjoyable.As a Clancy...sucked. As just another book...so-so. As many of the other reviews point out, it is very clear in just the early pages that this is just another book that Tom Clancy has lent his name to. The quality of writing and meticulous attention to the details are woefully absent, and what is left is just an average mass market thriller.That said, once I got over the fact that it definitely wasn't a Tom Clancy novel and adjusted my expectations, I did find myself at least mildly entertained. Overlooking the flaws in the details and the disjointed jumping between characters and time periods, the overall story of the book wasn't horrible.I think the biggest flaw (besides the Tom Clancy name on it) is that it was a hardcover book (with hardcover price). If this had been just a random mass-market paperback I picked up at a bookstore, I wouldn't really have any complaints. Unfortunately, it wasn't.In closing, to equate it to a movie, this wasn't by any means an Oscar Award winning film, but it was better than the monster movie of the month thrown together by SyFy.
